Gender Coordinator: Ms. Jane Mkhonta

Mandate

  • To mainstream gender and family issues into all areas of national development, including legislation, policies, programmes and projects. This mandate includes:
  • To develop, direct, coordinate and supervise all gender related policies, plans, projects and legislation.
  • Ensure ratification, implementation and state party reporting on international legal instruments, e.g. the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women, Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights and on the Rights of Women in Africa, the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development etc.
  • To ensure state party reporting on resolutions and recommendations on the international Treaty Bodies at global, continental and regional levels.
  • To monitor and evaluate the implementation of gender and development activities in all development sectors (public, private and civil society levels).
  • To facilitate gender mainstreaming in sector development programs at all levels.
  • To provide capacity building on gender mainstreaming and analysis for gender focal points within government, civil society and private sector organisations.
  • To promote a conducive family environment for the both men and women.
  • To support and promote the family structure and ensure cohesion.
  • To provide technical support to the Women Parliamentary Caucus activities at local level and enhance local/regional/international networks.
  • To promote collaboration with gender networks, nationally, regionally and internationally.

Key Focus Areas

Gender as a social development issue is largely based on social interaction between males and females in any given situation (be it in the family/home, work, school, community etc. Socialisation; Gender Based Violence; Health, Reproductive Health and HIV; Education and Training; Politics and Decision Making; Legal and Human Rights; Poverty and Economic Empowerment; Information, Communication and Arts; Environment and Natural Resources.
